About Pansa

The Perth African Nations Sports Association (PANSA) is dedicated to breaking down barriers and providing life opportunities to African–Australians through the medium of sport.

For over a decade, PANSA – and its predecessor, the Perth African Nations Football Council – has worked to ease the transition of new arrivals from African nations into their new home in Western Australia.

At the heart of our philosophy is social cohesion; we believe it is important for migrants to maintain their identity, while feeling they have a place in the wider Australian community. Sport is a language that we all understand.

PANSA is the only African sports association of its kind in Western Australia.

Our Work

PANSA’s purpose is to advance the social and public welfare of people from African–Australian communities. We achieve our purpose by:

delivering physical education programs to encourage social interaction, personal confidence, self-awareness, improve physical and mental wellbeing, and improve quality of life

referring members to services such as employment, mental health, legal and any relevant community service

increasing the self-confidence of young people through the development of strong role models in the community

providing education on the issues affecting young people to their parents and carers, and helping them gain access to support networks

increasing awareness of the importance of health and well-being in the lives of young people, and in the older generation

helping African families better integrate into wider Australian society.

Resources and Policies:

PANSA Member Protection Policy: We work with many hundreds of participants and work to uphold their rights, roles and responsibilities for the betterment of the community. Our Member Protection Policy underpins this work and sets out the reporting and parameters for the work done in, by, for and around PANSA. We also employ a qualified Member Protection Information Officer to ensure the integrity of our practices and support for people with grievances and complaints. See our PANSA Member Protection Policy.

PANSA Safeguarding Policy: We work with many hundreds of children and vulnerable people and take seriously our responsibility to provide a suitable, safe and secure environment to nurture their journey through our programs and the wider world. See our PANSA Safeguarding Policy.

PANSA Gender Equity Policy: We work to the interests and empowerment of women to overcome traditional and modern barriers to equal opportunity and access. See our PANSA Gender Equity Policy.

PANSA Inclusion and Access Policy: While we work to provide an excellent service to all of the community, we encounter a wide range of people with diverse ability types representative of the wider community. We are proud to deliver inclusive and adaptable programs to include, wherever possible, all of the community and our policy creation was overseen by a PANSA official with lived experience. See our PANSA Inclusion and Access Policy.

Volunteer Management Toolkit: Based on PANSAs Well Meaning to Well Equipped project 2024-25 we summarized the project findings and compiled a report into how best to manage volunteers through our community.

We thank all the community groups who supported this journey to map issues, gaps and strengths around the small army of volunteers who make it possible for over 1000 informal community-level participants to train, play and socialise using various sports.

We hope this resource provides you with insights to do something better or be inspired to do more or something new or different.

This project was supported through WA’s Volunteer Management Activity, funded by the Australian Government Department of Social Services.
